Injector
Changeout
Suppliment
If you need to know how
to remove the plenum, click here and follow the link back when done
This page deals with changing out the injectors to really any size or replacing a bad stock injector.
Once the plenum is removed, it
is a fairly simple task. There are four bolts holding down the fuel rails.
Since the fuel rails are connected
in a loop by tubing on one end, we want to remove all four bolts so as
not to provide undue stress
on the flanges for the piping on the rail end.
The photo on the right will
show I have removed all four blots to the fuel rails and lifted the rails
and
injectors out of the bottom
seat. All injectors are now hanging freely from the rails.
There are four plastic spacers
that divide the rail mounting tabs from their mating bolt hole on the block.
As you lift the rails and injectors,
remove these spacers and place them on the side for safe keeping.
If you knock one of them off
while you are working and it falls down into the abyss, you will be stuck
with ordering
one from the dealer, so better
safe than sorry, they are not on there very tight.
For this lets assume that the
#1 injector needs replacement as shown below in the photo on the right.
Push downward
on the injector removing it
from the rail with the plug still attached to the injector. Once up and
able to be worked on
remove the keeper spring (U
shaped Clip) from the plug as shown below, taking care not to drop it.
I found a small
screwdriver prying up on the
spring front center starts it's removal. (This is shown in photo #4 below)
It is pretty stiff
as it is hardened steel and
retains pressure inward on the sides of the plug so be ready for it to
spring closer together.
In other words it will go from
this |_| on the plug to this /_\ when off the plug, so hold on to them
tight and don't let go.
Also put them in a safeplace
away from the engine compartment in a bottle or something.
Once the clip is removed the
plug will come off easily. You have removed an injector. If this is the
only one,
replace it with a new one and
reassemble.
The whole job start to finish
including the plenum will be about 4 hours if it is your first time. Do
it a few times and
you can change plugs, injectors,
remove and replace the plenum all in about in 45 minutes.
Shown below is injectors for the rear bank # 2, 4 and 6 cylinder. On the right is shown removal of the spring clip
Shown below left photo, center
right, little black round thingy is the lower injector gasket. They can
be reused if they are
not dried out or cracked. Replacement
to me is wise. Yeah, the whole set upper "O" ring and lower gasket is $18,
but
if you get it all back together
and you have an injector leak, is it worth the $18? You decide on that
one.
I replaced mine.
Upper "O" ring is part # MD614813
Lower "Insulator" is part number MD 087060 I paid $17.40, no tax so figure
$20
The photo on the right is showing
hooking up all the injectors to the electrical before installing them in
the fuel
rail. This is important because
once the injector is installed it is almost a juggling act to replace the
clips.
They are hard enough to hang
on to replacing them before you reinstall the injectors. Do this first,
take my advice.

On the left is the completed
job with all new injectors,, well almost,, hehe
On the right,, yeah you guessed
it, I painted the rear valve cover,, why not?? How often are you going
in there?
Do that and maybe your engine
will look like this after 10 years and 108k miles with 200k more to go.
Just replace your Plenum and
you are in business!!
